Here is the finalized version of the 2009 xmas tree layout using an MTH Premier R40 Subway set, Lionel Fastrack, MTH Graduated Trestle System, and MTH Realtrax Trestle Set.

Here you can see how close the train is to the upper deck when it has to go under.

This was the 1st version, but due to the incline of the spiral it's better to have the train go down on the steep grade.

Hayden Panettiere's tattoo is fully visible in these pictures from Cannes. What we can see is an Italian phrase, "Vivere senza rimipianti". This translates to, "to live without regrets." Unfortunately "regrets" in Italian is "rimpianti."

So it looks like Hayden has at least one regret...

Here's an excellent post from Hecuter on how he went about importing a BMW to Canada from the USA. With the slumping American dollar this process could save you 10% from buying in Canada.

For all those interested in bringing your dream car into the Great White North, this is for you. I'm still in the process, but I'm nearing the final steps, so I thought I'd share what I learned here with everyone else. What follows is a walkthrough on all the steps you need to take to get your baby back home.

Assuming you've found the car you like, have gotten someone in the area to check it out, and, if you're super organized, gotten a local mechanic to inspect it, you're ready to begin the import process. This actually took a lot longer than I expected, and it's full of red-tape and fees.

What to Do Before You Do Anything:

Make sure the car is legally allowed into Canada. Several cars, for various reasons, are banned flat out. Don't make the mistake of buying a car not able to cross the border. There's a list of acceptable vehicles here:

The 15 Year Rule:

If the car is more than 15 years old, determined from the month and year of the build date (found on a sticker on the d. side door paneling), it is exempt from all RIV regulations. 6 months more on my car and I wouldn't have to deal with any of this, but it's important to note, because it makes importing older cars a lot easier. (See post later in thread for more details)

For the sake of convenience, let's assume you love the car, everything checks out, and you’re ready to buy it. I took the path of flying down, then driving it back up, so I'll go from there.

Documents Needed:

You'll need your seller to provide you with the following documents to keep on hand:

1. The Vehicle Title (You can do with just a faxed copy before the actual transfer of title takes place)

2. A Bill of purchase. Just a piece of paper stating “I, Seller, am selling this Vehicle to X for $XXX on the date of X. The VIN # is XXX”. Have both parties sign the bottom with printed names underneath.

3. A copy of the registration. More on this later.

Once you have these documents, you'll need to fax them to whatever border crossing you're passing through a full 72 hours in advance. The clock starts the next morning after you fax them, and they don't count Saturdays and Sundays. So assuming you send them in Monday, the clock starts Tuesday and the earliest you can pass through that crossing is Friday. Also note that At some locations, NO IMPORTING IS ALLOWED ON THE WEEKENDS! This almost ruined my trip, so keep that in mind.

After you fax the documents in, get your plane ticket/transportation/travel papers in order. If you're planning on going on a one way flight, or driving down, make sure you're holding on to that list of documents, as they'll want proof when they question you. If you're shipping it through an auto transporter, now is the time to book it.

An aside on Auto Transporters:
Many of the companies I called wouldn't actually cross the border themselves, so you may end up having it shipped to the edge of the country, and having to go down and do the final crossing yourself. Also, you may find it's more cost-efficient if you do the driving. I went from SoCal to Washington, and I received quotes averaging about $1200 USD. My plane ticket was $300 last minute, and gas was only about $100. It was a 3 day trip, so accommodations didn't add up to much either. You also get the thrill of learning about your car over a cross-country trip.

Insurance
If you chose to drive it back up yourself, you're going to need insurance. Go into your local insurance broker and ask for a "Binder of Insurance". This covers you so long as you go from your origin to your destination via the most direct route. There's some wiggle room, but once you get closer to home you can't blast around the canyons the rest of the day. You'll need to provide the VIN and plate # of the car when you're getting insured. This BoI isn't enough on it's own though. It's only valid if it's riding on a registered vehicle with plates. So if the seller has registration on the car, you'll be driving on his or her plates and registration until you reach your destination. When you meet with the seller, you'll need to get him to sign a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability form at the DMV. This means that if you crash, it's not going on the seller's insurance.

If the car has no registration or plates, you'll need to go to the nearest DMV and get some. Registration is easy - it comes in the form of a One Trip Permit which lets you leave the country without having to go through emissions testing or any of the other hoops, and it's much cheaper than full registration. You can apply for temporary plates in the same way. Seeing as this is the DMV, be prepared for a long wait. It's best to set half a day to this.

All the insurance agencies I talked to covered their asses saying I had to call all the DoTs for states I was traveling through to make sure the insurance was valid. After a million infuriating automated messaging systems and left messages, the short answer is yes, it's valid.

So you've got the car, faxed the border documents, gotten your insurance, and now you're ready to cross the border.

At the US Border:

Step into the office and produce the original title, bill of sale, and registration. They'll inspect the car and check the VIN, then stamp your registration, and you're off to home turf.

At the Canadian Border:

Produce the same documents again, along with your Driver's license, and they'll hand you Form 1. This is really important, so don't lose it. They'll charge you $195 for giving you this form, 7% of the car's value for GST, and 6% for duty. You'll pay provincial sales tax when you get insurance (6% in BC). To give you an idea of perspective, I paid $6600 USD for my car, and at the border, paid $972. All these funds are non-refundable. Once you cross the border, you now have 45 days to get it inspected and registered, otherwise it's sent back to whence it came. And you're out all those border fees. So don't do this. It's unlikely though, because they give you an automatic 10 day extension, and if you call a week or two before deadline, you can get more time. So if you haven't gotten it inspected in 2 months, get off your ass you lazy bastard.

Once You've Gotten It Back Home:

Now you have to bring in into a Canadian Tire to get it officially inspected. There are two inspections you need to go through - An Out of Province inspection (OOP), and a Federal Out-Of-Country Inspection. You get the form for the OOPI at your local insurance brokers, or if in doubt, your provincial insurance agency should have it. Both deal with the general safety of your car; The OOCI checks to make sure the car is road-legal throughout Canada, and the OOPI checks your vehicle against provincial regulations. You can tow your car to the shop, but you can also get special 1 - 3 day temporary operating permits designed especially for this case. They average around $30 - $80 a day depending on the level of coverage and the value of your car. I wouldn't trust Canadian Tire to empty my ashtray, but unfortunately they've got the government contract. There's also a few local shops that should be licensed to do it, call the RIV to find one in your area. Some, not all, of the thing's they'll look for:

Metric Speedometer, DOT approved Windshield, Windows, Light bulbs (Take out those Angel Eyes!), child safety restraint harnesses, working seat belts, Catalytic converter present, high mounted stop light, neutral switch, acceptable window tint (35% in BC), and daytime running lights. They'll make sure the car is in good working order and nothing could be danger on the road. If you have any motor swaps or large conversions like I did, they will need a receipt for the work done. Anything they categorize as a "Major Modification" needs to be accompanied by a receipt showing the shop who did the job and the parts that were installed. So if you're looking at buying an S52 swapped car, make sure you get the paperwork too!

**As far as the daytime running lights go, you can buy a kit at BMW for $307, but Canadian Tire sells one for $27 that does the same thing. In this case the extra money for OEM parts isn't justified. All the DRL do is turn on the headlights when you switch the ignition.**

If you pass the inspection, they'll stamp your Form 1 and in about a week a new "Canadian Certified" sticker will be mailed to you to stick on your car.

Then you'll need to get a "Recall Clearance Letter" from BMW Canada. This is letter basically saying the car you have is free from all outstanding recalls in Canada. It MUST have the following: Manufacturer's Logo, official letterhead, the signature of the official with his name and position, and the VIN #. Every other car company does this for free, but, seeing as it's a bimmer, BMW now charges $500 for it. Nothing you can do about it either.

The Last Step:

You've jumped through all the hoops, now comes the final stretch. Bring all your papers to your provincial insurance broker to get your new registration, plates, and insurance. You'll also be paying your provincial sales tax now. Shove the important documents in your sagging glovebox, keep the rest in a file back home, and you're good to go.

The BMW film series, The Hire was a series of eight short films (each about eight minutes long, on average) produced for the Internet in the summers of 2001 and 2002. The "first season" films, were executive-produced by director David Fincher with small "interludes" (supposedly "bridging" the actual films together but having nothing to do with them at all) directed by Ben Younger. The three "second season" films saw directors (and siblings) Ridley Scott and Tony Scott take the place of Fincher in the role of executive producer, due to Fincher's full calendar with Panic Room. On a closed stretch of highway in Washington State, the Ultimate Aero posted a top speed of 257.11mph (413.83km/h) on its first pass and 254.55mph (409.71km/h) on its return pass to set the new top speed record of 255.83mph (411.76km/h). The distance between Resolute in northern Canada and the magnetic North Pole at Ellef Ringnes Island is 320 nautical miles [450 miles]. It's a journey across sea ice and unforgiving mountainous terrain where temperatures can drop to minus 65ºC - a temperature at which exposed skin can freeze in less than 30 seconds. Only fools would attempt such a journey. So Jeremy and James are attempting to do it in the now legendary Toyota Hilux and Richard hopes to make it on a sled pulled by ten Canadian Inuit dogs. When you think of luxury executive saloons, one car always comes to mind - the BMW 5-series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-series remains a crucial car to BMW. With the current E60 5-series introduced back in 2004, BMW is preparing the sixth-generation model to be revealed in 2010.

It will be a tough job for the designers as well as the thousands of engineers working across BMW's development centers to renew the current model, a car that already resides at the edge of the technical front line. The new design is critical for BMW's design manager Adrian van Hooydonk and his team, who have to create an exterior that radiates the brand's distinctive design values and at the same time feels new and fresh. Using information from various sources, these renderings were compiled by ourillustrator Radovan Varicak, giving us a preview of what the final version will look like.

The front-end will likely feature a more upright kidney grille in order to comply with stronger pedestrian protection laws, while the headlights won't be stretched out like on the current model. BMW's characteristic interaction between convex and concave shapes will still be emphasized, and will be clearly indicated in the engine hood's lines. The rear roofline and C-pillar connects more fluidly to the trunk lid, which is now devoid of the 'Bangle-butt' that was so universally derided with the E60 model. Parts of the tail-lights continue onto the trunk lid in order to strengthen the impression of width. We must say, this design is very pleasing and if BMW's car looks anything like this, we sure it'll lure back any customers loss to its rivals because of the controversial styling of the former E60.

One of the horrors of dining is dining on Valentine's Day. Restaurants usually depend on this day to get them through the rest of the winter season, but why do they perform so poorly on February 14th of every year?

Most restaurants usually offer an overpriced prix fixed menu only of they're best selling food. One would think this would make it easy for the restaurant to cope with the Valentine's day crowd. But this is not the case. The food is usually late in arriving, overcooked, and not one would call their best.

The service also suffers on an event that happens every year! The host will definitely make you wait 15 minutes or so at the bar even though you have made reservations. I suppose this is to make you spend some money for special Valentine day's cocktails. My ketel one on the rocks doesn't change with the date.

One will also be waiting for the waiters to take your order, even though there may only be 3 options instead of a full menu since it's a prix fixed dinner. And that will be the last time you see them until your dinner comes, they are too busy with other things - other than you. After dessert is served and you want your check, you must set up a light tower in order to get their attention. Unless you are taking up prime real estate and they will try and rush you out in order to the get the next sheep into the shopping block.

So here are some tips to enjoy Valentine's Day:

Don't eat out on Valentine's Day, February the 14th.
Reserve a table after 9pm so that the rush will be somewhat over.
Take your date to White Castle, read above, to make your Valentine's Day steamy!

Watch as the Hamster's footage where he survived a crash from a 10,000 hp rocket powered car, the "Vampire". He cracks jokes before he starts and is quite prophetic.

He completes 2 runs, one at 220 mph and 314 mph, successfully. The official British land speed record is 301 mph.

The 3rd run, where he crashes, topped out at 288 mph. You can see at the 8:15 mark that the left front tire explodes and all hell breaks loose.

As you can see that Hammond had all the safety precautions helmet, neck brace, fire suit, etc and it was performed in a controlled environment.

Proton parent of Lotus is about to be under the rule of Volkswagen, this cannot be good. In an ideal world Lotus would have access to the power of VW and the Elise, but it is not ideal. I can see a redesign of the Elise and Exige would phase out the Toyota 1.8L engine in favor of a VW 3.2L V6. Goodbye my friend. Hopefully this will make the Proton Elise/Exige more desirable.

Gym Class Heroes = NYC Radio Hip Hop Is Dead

When I saw this on MTV I was amazed it was the first time I'm hearing about Gym Class Heroes. And then I got depressed since MTV is how I found out about the song and the group. NYC Radio will never play anything like this unless it's sold 1,000,000 copies. Progressive NYC is where mediocre radio lives. Unless you see it at Wal-mart you won't hear it from the hardcore hip-hop HOT97 or Power 105.1 - it's a disgrace. Hip hop is dead as Nas said and NYC radio stations prove it everyday. I miss the days of Stretch and Bobbito.

The biggest news about the tiny little 1 series is that BMW debuts several new technologies with it's introduction:

Brake Energy Regeneration (iGR) - The system uses an Intelligent Alternator Control (IAC) and an Absorbent Glass Mat battery to recycle previously lost energy, in turn saving fuel. This is achieved as the IAC reduces drag on the engine by only engaging when required to charge the battery, whereas a traditional alternator is always pulling power from the engine. Additionally, the energy generated by the engine on over-run (under braking or descending a hill) was previously wasted. Now this lost energy is utilised by the IAC to charge the battery. iGR alone is responsible for a three per cent improvement in fuel economy.
Automatic Start-Stop function to cut fuel consumption. Standard on all manual transmission models (except 130i), the system automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and the driver puts the car into neutral. To restart the driver only need engage the clutch again before pulling away in the normal manner. Should he not want to use the Automatic Start-Stop function it can be manually switched off.
The use of Electric Power Steering results in a 90 per cent energy saving compared to a conventional mechanical hydraulic steering system. Power assistance is now provided by an electric motor that works only when required, such as turning a corner. Other fuel saving enhancements have been made courtesy of various ancillary devices, such as the air-conditioning power supply being disconnected from the drivetrain when not in use. Even flaps behind the kidney grille improve economy, closing up for improved aerodynamic efficiency should the engine require less airflow. The feature also improves cold starting times.

BMW Z9?

No one seems to be sure what this car is. The concensus from the internet is it's a Z9. And the internet is never wrong. Well there are many things wrong with this car if it is a new BMW Z9 roadster.

Cloth Convertible Top - if they want a Z9 to go up against the MB SL, it needs to have a retractable hardtop. The new 335i has one already and they would certainly not go back to cloth.
Twin exhaust not quad - if it's a Z9, it must have the V10 engine from the M6 and M5. This could be easily modified though.
Skinny rear tires - those tires don't look like it will be able to handle 200hp let alone the V10's 500+ hp.

Most likely it's a Z2 - an entry level roadster, hopefully better looking than the atrocity that is the Z4.

The Chevy Bolt is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, powered by an electric motor, using lithium ion battery cells. Chevrolet calls this the E flex drive-system. It's estimated range on a full charge is 40 miles. After 40 miles it would leave the batteries with a 30% charge and this is when the gas-powered generator is activated. The only part that concerns me is the 3200 lb weight of the Volt. If Chevrolet can control the fat on this car they will have a lot of success. I think the E-flex system will succeed better when used with their compact car platform. A good start for the E-flex would be the Chevy Aveo which weighs 2343 lb, but the Chevy Volt is a bit more appealing to the eye.

Wow I didn't know Dodge lost the rights to the Viper name - what a bunch of dolts. Anyways it looks like the Fifth Gear guys have formulated that a drag race, a drift contest, and a little track time wins the battle - I can't argue with that.

Unfortunately it is not the Z06 Vette that is tested against the brawny Viper or else the results would be very different.

But don't take my word for it since I would never drive a Corvette.

Is this the first production twin charger (turbo + super charger) system? I believe it is unless someone did a gasoline / steam engine in the past. The car uses a 1.4 liter engine and adds 2 power adders which are shut off when not needed. This gives us a 38mpg car which can turn fun!

I can't wait for the aftermaket to get their hands on this car. I wonder what monstrosity will come about. Go VW go!
